The history of Provideniya discovery and naming goes back to the mid of 19th century. The famous Arctic explorer Sir John Franklin was lost during his third Arctic expedition. Several British ships were sent to search in North Atlantic as well as the Bering Strait. One of the ships was the "Plover", under Commander Thomas Moore.
On October 17, 1848 the "Plover" sailed into the unknown Bay which was very comfortable for recreation and had a rich resources of fresh water. Due to difficult weather conditions Captain Moore made a decision to winter in this well protected, deep water harbor. The British sailors surveyed the adjacent coastline, and entered into active contact with the Eskimo people from a nearby Native village.
Commander Thomas Moore and his crewmen considered that only thanks to Providence of God they could find such comfortable place for wintering. Since that time the Bay was named the Bay of Provideniya.
Moore named the Bay of Provideniya, the Emma harbor, and the Plover Bay.
In 1937 Russian Arctic sea Port was founded here in the Bay of Provideniya, and gave birth to the city in 1938.
The Port serves as the most northeastern warehousing, support and refueling station on the Russian Pacific coast, and along the Northern Shipping Route. After 1998 total amount of population of Provideniya has been considerably reduced and estimates only about 2,000 now.
